Introduction

Teidra Fontenette teaches 3rd grade Math and 4th grade Reading at Benjamin Franklin Elementary in the Orleans Parish School District (New Orleans, LA). She has been using the Qwizdom Student Response System for at least 8 years.

Needs and Challenges

As a long-time user of the Qwizdom ARS, Ms. Fontenette used the system for taking attendance, as a “bell ringer,” and to deliver vocabulary quizzes and short tests. She says:

“Qwizdom excites my students because they feel as if they have a video game controller in their hands. The immediate feedback lets them know if they are on the right track or indicate what they need to focus on. I love the fact that the scores are instantly available and I am able to identify what they need to work on in a short amount of time.”

While Ms. Fontenette appreciates many of Qwizdom’s features, she wanted to try something different to really reach her students. Because she teaches students who are at a variety of learning levels, she knows that they will require lessons that will meet those different needs. On occasion, she spends lots of time researching and/or writing lessons to ensure all her students are receiving the support they need.

Solution

Ms. Fontenette uses the ReadySet standards-aligned lessons available with the Qwizdom ARS. She says, “My favorite feature is the set of premade lessons. They are aligned with our state standards. This saves me a lot of time of researching and/or typing in lessons.”

She feels that the lessons are an “effective supplement” and she “can challenge those (students) who need more and modify lessons for those who need an extra boost.” In searching for the lessons, she attests that she is “offered several options to choose from (and they) are on a variety of levels” so that she can better meet the needs of her students.

She has definite plans for using the ReadySet lessons:

“They will be used for teacher modeling, class discussions, and testing. Students who require small group intervention will also be given assignments from the lessons. In my absence, the substitute will be able to pull up a lesson based upon the skill I am teaching at that time.”

Feedback

“Qwizdom brings excitement to the classroom. Students are able to test or review in different modes. Students are able to receive immediate feedback. Qwizdom saves the teacher hours of time of checking multiple papers.”

Not only does Ms. Fontenette really enjoy Qwizdom ARS, so do her students:

“Qwizdom excites my students because they feel as if they have a video game controller in their hand. The immediate feedback lets them know if they are on the right track or indicate what they need to focus on.”
